The community lies within the Precambrian Shield region of the province, which is characterized by granite and gneissic rocks overlaid with a thin muskeg cover. The many lakes make the area suitable for fishing, hunting and recreational purposes. The local economy is based on trapping and fishing. Granville Lake trappers are located in the Pukatawagan Registered Trap Line Zone. Commercial fishing takes place on Granville Lake, Stag Lake, Watt Lake and Barrington Lake. Additional employment is available with Sherritt Gordon Mines at Fox Lake and Leaf Rapids.
